Double success for the Bernese team - The team won bronze and an "Honourable Mention" at the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot!
For the 16th time, a team from the University of Bern participated in the prestigious Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot. This year, the University of Bern was represented by Patrick Gürtler, Alina Kuster, Lucas Nold, Annina Schmid, Margaretha Schulz and Michelle Stöckli. As the coronavirus was still present, the competition was held in a hybrid form.
The oral training phase started with the "Swiss Day", a trial round with all Swiss teams, where the Bernese team achieved a first success by placing third. In addition, the Bernese "Mooties" participated in two virtual "Pre-Moots" and, to everyone's great delight, were also able to travel to two on-site "Pre-Moots" and meet teams from all over the world. In virtual London and Helsinki as well as on site in Copenhagen and Belgrade, the "Mooties" pleaded, among others, against teams from Argentina, Denmark, India and Slovenia.
This year’s team continued the ongoing success of the preceding Bernese teams. The memorandum for claimant jointly written by the team reached the third place, winning the bronze medal. This in a competition among 365 teams from 84 countries. In addition, the memorandum for respondent received an honourable mention, with a total of only 18 of the submitted memoranda for respondent being awarded. This puts the Bernese team in the top 1.1 % of all teams regarding the memoranda for claimant and respondent! In short, a crowning conclusion to the Vis Moot Court adventure that the team can look back on for a long time.
